The best Bond music!!!

The 1960s movie scores of John Barry (and also Jerry Goldsmith, for instance) have some crisp to it, some grandiosity, some no-bullshit clarity, I always admire. What is it, that today nothing comparable can be heard in movies?

Just watched this movie on TCM. I believe the last time I watched it was with my parents a couple of decades ago. (The first time I watched it was with them, too.) My mom passed away in 2014. The 1st anniversary of my father's passing is this month (June). I smiled a lot watching the movie again but also felt sad thinking of my parents and other loved ones who are gone. The theme song didn't help. But it's so beautiful.

More about VENDETTA ... "Nostalgia Central’s commentary on the UK TV series Vendetta (1966-1968), which consists of 35 episodes each 50 minutes long, focuses on the contrived drama of ex-mafioso turned mafia-hunter, Danny Scipio, and his partner, Angelo James, played by Neil McCallum. The series was filmed on location in Malta, regardless of the global setting, and featured British actors slipping accents as foreign characters. The budget did stretch to hire a genuine Italian actor, Stelio Candelli, as Scipio. However, it’s an oversight not to mention the distinctively catchy theme music by composer John Barry. Let’s dissect the Vendetta theme like an ape with a stone and a Rolex. The elements begin with the selection of the cimbalom as the weird timbre du jour for Barry. This odd-sounding instrument originated in works like King Rat, The I.P.C.R.E.S.S. File, and The Persuaders, which sparkled with gritty and ear-tickling surprises thanks to John Leach. Barry once said, “If I wanted a freaky sound, John Leach was the only game in town.” Leach, a collector of odd instruments and a fine player of them, provided Barry with an aural toy store. The cimbalom is a twangy, Danubian-sounding zither-esque-type instrument struck with felt hammers. It’s sort of like eviscerating a piano and having a go. Why not a standard piano theme? To break through the clogged pipes of fame and fortune in the 60s required something sounding wild, novel, arresting, and required outstanding talent and daring resourcefulness. Plucked and struck instruments “cut-through” a sound mix, standing out robust and captivating. This is what TV producers long for in a theme. John Barry’s penchant for catchy rhythms is evident. As a student of Russian music theorist, Joseph Schillinger, Barry accessed fine tricks in his composer-tool-kit others lacked. Barry loved the driving and unpredictable (fresh) tactic Schillinger taught as an exercise whereby offsets and overlaps of rhythm parts can be contrived to dovetail with one another without bumping into and crowding out the individual phrases. Let’s examine the 45 rpm single. A key cachet of Barry’s structures for film and TV themes is as old as Marc Antony’s funeral speech: “Friends, Romans, countrymen - lend me your ears.” How to get an audience to settle in and attentively expectant? A fanfare, introductory tease, a declarative statement? The John Barry Sound almost always has this introduction to what is to follow. It is the smell of popcorn to lure you with insidious captivation! Listen to the introductory tickle and the seduction is immediate. First, we hear a dotted-rhythm sound of hickory sticks tapping out a Morse Code style - but what else? The chac a-taka chac-a-taka maraca! Notice how the maraca fits in-between the clacking of the hickory sticks? (Thank you, J. Schillinger). What else? Tambourine! Yes, a third layer of contrasting timbre is added to the rhythm patterns of the first two instruments creating a tertiary foundation. The melody is a three-note phrase, (rest) three transitional notes, and three notes again. (rest) three transitional notes (rest) four notes. (19 notes). As the melody begins the hickory sticks, and maracas disappear. Is that a harpsichord, cimbalom, kantale, mandolin, mandola? See how your curiosity is heightened by the unexpected musical texture of this extremely sparse thematic melody? 42 seconds into the melody, suddenly, an 8 to the bar acoustic bass line (jazz style) cuts a figure supporting all the above and firmly rooting the John Barry Sound in a peculiar idiom that is definitely not jazz, not pop, not typical TV fare - so what the hell is it? I just told you: The John Barry Sound. Catchy? Yes. Memorable? Yes. Surprising? Yes. Can we categorize it? Hell no! The thing is - we really are attracted to it the way a cat studies the movements of a mouse. But wait - there’s more! 49 seconds into the melody a flute commences as an antiphony to the main melody (A question and answer). The melody “asks” a three-note question and the flute “answers” with three notes of its own. The implied harmonic structure is straight out of Chopin, stepping down in half-steps (chromatically) while the simple melody repeats mono-thematically on top. This, of course, is not obvious but is used as an architecture for the structure of the melody. What could possibly happen next? There is a lot happening - is there room inside our ears for even more? John Barry thinks: Yes! Muted trumpet improvising licks! John Barry aficionados will find a companion example in The I.P.C.R.E.S.S. file soundtrack album. A drum kit has slyly crept in with a drumstick emphasizing the 4th beat to help us find our location on the sound map using the rim, with a defined jazz implication. John Barry is demonstrating an enormous capacity to find “spaces” for sounds without a train wreck. (Thanks again, J. Schillinger). When it comes to packing a suitcase for a short trip, John Barry has an entire wardrobe closet inside! Who could possibly compete with him with this kind of know-how?
